    12. Eraser and cloning

Could there stilll be small errors in the picture? The figure shall be completely free from the background. In this chapter you will be erasing picture areas and clone in them.
    Dark background accentuates the errors

You can control the free scraping quality by seeing the figure on a bright colored background. Try that:
    1. You are still working with the image file peter plys.psd. Click on the Layers palette:

    2. Open a new layer (with Control+Shift-+n). You need not naming it.
    3. Fill the new layer with a pure blue color. If your foreground color is blue, you can use the shortcut Alt+Backspace for that.
    4. Now reverse the two picture layers. Now you can clearly see if the contour is in order. By us there are still some light pixels by the teddy bear’s sweater. They are not particularly noticeable, but they are there:

    5. They could be removed with the eraser. Select the regular eraser (with shortcut letter e):

    6. Use a soft brush in size 5:

    7. Set the eraser opacity low, not over 50%. Then it does not erase as vigorously:

    8. Zoom in high (500%).
    9. The plys layer needs to be active, otherwise you would work in the blue background, and that is not the intent.
    10. Use the eraser to carefully remove the light pixels in the figure’s edge. It is easy to see the effect on the blue background:

    11. Save the picture with Control+s.
Erase someting and clone something else

Now you are going to try using the stamp tool. That is used to fill a picture area with pixels that are retrieved from some othe area; the tool is also called a cloner, and it is an indispensable assist when retouching.
    1. On top of the teddy bear’s head is an ugly, black pimple. It needs to be removed:

    2. Start with the eraser. Set Opacity to the value 100%, so the tool really erases. Then start removing the black pimple:

    3. Just erase away. When you are finished, there is a nasty hole in the teddy bear’s head:

    4. Then choose the tool Clone Stamp Tool:

    5. The ruber stamp is actually a variant of the brush tool. So choose a hard brush size 5:

    6. Now you are going to clone. The cloning is done in two stages. First you select a source point. You do that by holding the Alt key down and click once. Choose the source point somewhere in the edge of the figure like here:

    7. Then place the cursor in the area to be filled. Click and drag the mouse across the blue area to be filled. Notice that the source point follows when you drag the mouse:

    8. Repeat the operation a few times. You might have to change source point along the way. You really need to set some time off to make a succesful cloning.
    9. If you feel that the work moves in a wrong direction, use the History palette to cancel a series of clone moves. Try that:
